Everything You Need to Know to Learn to Drive
When you begin to learn to drive there is so much to take in you’ll wonder how you’ll ever manage to remember it all.
Maybe you are a more ‘academic’ than ‘practical’ person and struggle to coordinate everything during your driving lessons. If the practical side comes naturally to you when you’re learning to drive, perhaps you struggle to remember all of those theory questions? Driving Test Questions
Because the roads are busier than ever, more has to be done to make them safe. So, vehicle safety check questions are now included as part of the practical driving test. The questions are to make sure the learner driver knows how to check the basic safety of a car before they drive on the road. You may have heard of them referred to as ‘show me, tell me’ questions.
There’s no need to panic if you don’t know the first thing about how cars work. When you learn to drive with Homers Driving School everything you need to know to pass your driving test will be included during your lessons.
The current set of questions are on the DVSA website for you to see here. Let’s tell you a bit about what to expect.
Show Me Tell Me Questions
Of the nineteen questions, you will only be asked two. One will start with, ‘Show me…’ and the other, ‘Tell me…’ They may relate to something inside the car, outside the car or under the bonnet. If you get one wrong, you will get a ‘minor’ fault mark on the driving test. Whilst that’s not the end of the world, if you prepare well when you learn to drive, those minor faults can easily be avoided.
Some of the questions are easy and you’d have probably known the answer even before you began to learn to drive.
For example:
Show me how you would check that the horn is working.
Other questions are not so straightforward.
For example:
Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressure for this car and how tyre pressure should be checked.
That might sound difficult when you’re sitting here reading the question but it’s much easier when you’re sat in the car with your Homers driving instructor. They will teach you where all of your control switches are and what the dashboard warning lights mean.
An important part of learning to drive will be familiarising yourself with the car during your lessons. Then any question that comes up on your test will seem simple to you.
Making Good Drivers
Learning to drive is not just about passing your test, it is about becoming a good, safe driver for a lifetime and having confidence when you are sat behind the steering wheel.
So, if, during your driving test the weather conditions change and you need to clear your windscreen you’ll know where the controls are and how to do it. Which is exactly what the examiner on your test will be looking for. You don’t have to drive perfectly but you do need to be safe.
