Pupils learn valuable lesson in road safety
Road safety lessons
At Homer’s we are committed to making sure that our learners are the safest and most aware of their surroundings on the roads around the black country!
Recently pupils from John Terry School in years 11 and 12 have been learning about the dangers of digital devices behind the wheel which distract them and make them less aware of the things going on around them as road users putting themselves and others in potentially life-threatening danger.
Students in years 11 and 12 are the most likely to be learning to drive around the area and therefore a production was put on in order to try and engage with students about the dangers of using digital devices in the car. Just like when crossing the road and not looking because you’re too engaged with your phone if you were driving and doing the same the consequences would be twice as severe.
This was following a powerful production put on for the pupils by officers from West Midlands Fire Service and Trinity Ward Police who work hard to keep the community safe and see these types of road accidents every single day.
Road casualty reduction team
Andrew Giuseppe, who manages the Road Casualty Reduction Team said: “The number of road traffic casualties involving 16-24 year olds is disproportionately high and we have seen an increase in the number of incidents involving mobile devices.
“We hope that by working in partnership with schools and emergency services, that we can educate students and encourage them to be responsible drivers, creating safer roads and saving lives.”
Deputy head teacher of John Terry High School Neil Bowater said: “This was an incredibly powerful and moving production and the emotional impact certainly gave our year 11 and 12s something to think about.
“The subject is particularly relevant to students as about half of our sixth form have passed their driving tests and we want to ensure that they drive responsibly and without distraction.
“We would like to thank everybody for coming into school to deliver this life-saving message and we hope the message has a wider impact across our local community and parents.”
We think that this is a great idea and hope to continue to teach students in a positive way that makes them extremely aware of their surroundings.
